some thoughts on graduation

My name is Eileen Anderson, and this is my first blog post! I would like to use this opportunity to really introduce myself so that you can get to know me – but it is hard to tell one’s entire life story (and boring!). So, I have decided to reflect on my impending graduation and all of the amazing experiences I have had at UCO.

I am currently attending the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, OK. (Roll Chos!) While my path was not very direct, I am graduating this December with a bachelor’s degree in strategic communication. I have taken many adjacent classes in different areas of study along the way, which has allowed me to become a well-rounded student with skills in graphic design, web design, business and marketing. However, even with graduation quickly approaching, I consider myself to be a life-long learner, and I don’t intend to stop reading, listening and exploring the world around me anytime soon.

I was a rower at UCO from 2016-2020, and I ended my rowing career at the start of the pandemic to simply focus on schoolwork and to get my degree. I have developed many of my most cherished values and skills through my experiences with my school’s athletics department, from hard work and grit to having trust in my team. These skills have seeped into every part of my life and have fundamentally changed who I am as a person. I also got to be on the UCO team in a time of great success for the rowing team – we won our first and second national championships because of the combined work of the team plus all the girls that had come before us. I was also honored with being a team captain for two of my years on the team, and being selected as an All-American for three.

Another incredible experience I had at UCO was with AAF last spring. While I have had the pleasure of having pretty great groups to work with on projects in my time in school, nothing compares to the AAF team. It was so inspiring to be able to share my skills with a group of people who appreciated them, and in turn have people on my team that had skills that I didn’t. I had a major role creating and designing the plans book, which remains one of my favorite portfolio pieces to this day. If you would like to see the plans book, I would be happy to show you, but it must be protected with a password. If you are interested in viewing this project, please contact me using the form.

I have made many lifelong friends and colleagues here at UCO, and it is bittersweet to finally be done. I am so excited to see what else life holds for me around the corner, and if my college experience has taught me anything, it is to welcome the new with open arms.
